Deval Patrick, candidate for the Democratic nomination for Governor of Massachusetts, began a series of interviews with bloggers yesterday. He spoke with .08 Acres (and a Donkey) and Blue Mass. Group. (The three writers at BMG - Bob, Charley, and David - each posted separately on their 30 minute interview with Patrick.)
With his overtures to the blogosphere, Patrick is clearly taking a creative approach to his campaign. Given that his main opponent, Attorney General Thomas Reilly, has a 5 to 1 advantage in fundraising currently, Patrick needs that creativity. I have written previously that the contest for the Democratic Gubernatorial nomination in 2006 may come to resemble the race for the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1984. Reilly is the well-funded mainstream establishment candidate - similar to former Vice President Walter Mondale. Patrick is the outsider - appealing to "new ideas" - similar to then-Sen. Gary Hart (D - Colorado).
It will be interesting to see how extensively Patrick will make use of the blogosphere, whether other candidates follow suit, and what effect - if any - this contact will have on the political environment here and nationally.
