About two weeks ago, I wrote a piece called The Phenomenon of Celebrity, which considered celebrity as a fact of our economy, politics, and culture. In the piece, I discussed the Hollywood Stock Exchange or HSX, a website which treats movies, actors, and directors like stocks and bonds. I looked at five actors and their relative "value" in this marketplace. These actors are Parminder Nagra, George Clooney, Halle Berry, Rupert Grint, and Daniel Radcliffe. From time to time, I will revisit HSX to see how these actors are doing - particularly as I made the long-term prediction that Parminder Nagra - of Bend It Like Beckham and ER fame - would overtake Rupert Grint - Ron Weasley from the Harry Potter movies - sometime in the next few years. Grint was the highest valued actor on HSX as of October 11 at $200.00 per share.
Since October 11, Parminder Nagra and George Clooney have gained, while Halle Berry, Rupert Grint, and Daniel Radcliffe have declined. Parminder Nagra has gone from $5.60 to $5.86 per share, a 4.6 percent increase. George Clooney has gone from $50.50 to $51.62 per share, a 2.2 percent increase. Halle Berry decreased from $120.49 to $116.08 per share, a 3.7 percent decrease. Rupert Grint has gone from $200.00 per share to $195.59, a 2.2 percent decrease. Daniel Radcliffe has decreased slightly from $193.69 to $192.43 per share, a 0.7 percent decrease. (I note that I have not participated in HSX - and don't plan to - in order to maintain objectivity.)
As I wrote in my earlier piece, the Hollywood Stock Exchange is a light-hearted look at celebrity - a topic that deserves examination in both humorous and serious ways.
