That's a loss, mainly.

I'm a voracious science fiction reader, and never came across a 400-page book that Clarke couldn't stretch to 600 words. That said, his "Alien Years" is great, "Martian Chronicles" an order of magnitude better. I still love "Childhood's End". He was among the first to swing around into conceptual sci-fi, beyond the J. Campbell phrase.

I will confess that those unpleasant and persistent rumors of his personal...predilictions...didn't help the enjoyment of his work, either.
